Help needed

This is not an add or anything like it, I need you fellow bloggers to help me out with this quilting problem of mine. Do you remember when I told you about my first quilt?

I was so proud of myself, because I'm a self taught quilter. Making blocks was easy. Then there was a problem of getting batting. When I finally got, I wanted to finish this quilt. I looked at a few youtube tutorials and this is what turned out. I was unable to make so called loops, so I improvised and made waves instead.

This is NOT how a quilt is supposed to look I know that much. I'm obviously doing something wrog, but what? It's all wrinkled. I could just cry....

And this baby quilt was supposed to be a gift! Help me out will you? How can I rescue and finish this quilt? Any kind of help will be very much appreciated. Thank you!

  4. I did pin it and strech as much as I could when sewing those three layers.

  5. What kind of batting are you using? How close together are your basting pins? What foot are you using for sewing?

  6. Po moje ni tako hudo, ampak jaz nisem strokovnjak, zato prepuščam besedo drugim :).

  7. It could be that your batting, thread and/or fabric are made of different fibers and when you wash them, they shrink at different rates (for example, polyester batting, all cotton fabric and acrylic or polyester thread), so you get the extreme wrinkles. Some people love the look of a wrinkly quilt, and I actually like the way this came out, so maybe this becomes your own little cuddle quilt instead of a gift. After time and use, maybe it'll calm down. I hope this doesn't discourage you from keeping with the quilting! No matter what, you should still be quite proud of yourself for making (and finishing!) your first quilt!!

  8. Sicer še nikoli nisem delala valov, ampak mogoče en pomislek - a si šla vedno šivat v isto smer? Saj veš, če vlečeš en šiv v nasprotno smer ti ponavadi povleče. Vsaj jaz sem tak "kekec", da se mi to zgodi. ;)
upam, da ti bo uspelo razvozlat to uganko,

  9. Thank you all.
I thing the batting is from poliester and quilting fabric is cotton. I have no idea what kind of foot am I using. I see I have a lot to learn, before I'll be able to make a proper quilt.
Saša, a veš, da imaš prav, ravno šivanje v eno smer bi lahko bil problem!

  10. If it's polyester batting it's probably really puffy/fluffy. Because it's so puffy (the technical term is "loft") it's not easy to machine quilt. It's usually better to tie a quilt if you're using high loft batting (if you google or search youtube I'm sure there are a lot of examples of how to tie quilts.) A low loft batting, cotton or bamboo, is better for machine quilting because it's not as puffy.
As far as the sewing machine feet go, in order to get loops that are used in free motion quilting you'll need to use a different foot. It can do by different names, with my machine it's called a darning, foot other companies call it an embroidery foot. When using this foot you move the quilt through the machine instead of the feed dogs doing the work. If you want to straight line quilt a standard presser foot may work, but the top layer and the bottom layer may move through the machine at different rates, shifting where the quilt top is. To avoid that you can use a walking foot (even feed foot and plaid matching foot are other names for it). Essentially, this foot has feed dogs on the top to help move the fabric through. Hope this helps. :) There are a lot of great quilting blogs out there, let me know if you want me to link to some for you.

  15. Hopefully that's enough to get you started. Another good resource is About.com, but I sometimes find it a bit overwhelming. YouTube has a lot of great info, you should be able to find something there to help you if you decide to go looking there. :)
